Food contact materials (FCMs) is a collective term for all materials that may come into contact with food. In the actual supply chain, packaging materials, containers, tools, and equipment used in food production, processing, packaging, transportation, storage, distribution, and use processes can be considered FCMs. In order to ensure the quality and safety of FCMs, and thus ensure food safety, the EU has established and improved the corresponding regulations and developed relevant quality and safety standards.
The current FCM regulation is the regulation adopted by the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union on November 13, 2004, (EC) No. 1935/2004, which sets out the general principles of safety and inertness of FCMs, but this is not the whole story. The different forms of FCM (such as plastics, regenerated cellulose films, and ceramics) are governed by their own harmonized regulations. Within the EU, FCMs are assessed by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and all companies offering FCMs are required to comply with EU food contact regulations.
